Payment information

Payment transaction process

When fuelling at N1 self-service automats you are not asked for the amount you wish to pump for, instead N1 sends authorization transaction request for 22.000 ISK to check if there is enough balance on your card.

Once your bank confirms that there is sufficient balance on the card your bank will hold that amount aside while you pump, this is called an „authorization transaction “. When you finish pumping the fuel, a message is sent to your bank to cancel the authorization transaction and to charge the card for the amount that you pumped for.

Note that if the balance on your card is lower that 22.000 ISK N1 authorizes the pump for the amount that the issueing banks returns in the authorization response, e.g. if the balance is 10.000 ISK your card will be authorized for that amount. When you finish pumping the fuel, a message is sent to your bank to cancel the authorization transaction and to charge the card for the amount that you pumped for.

This should happen automatically within a few minutes.

In some cases it can take longer for the authorization transaction to be canceled, but in those cases it depends on how long it takes the issuer of the payment card to cancel the authorization request.

So, if you see two transactions from N1 for the same re-fuel, please note that the former transaction will be canceled by your card issuer, but it can take a few days.
